Stockholm’s hidden corners – discover the city beyond the tourist path with Cartinavia
When visitors arrive in Stockholm for the first time, they usually want to see the famous highlights. The Royal Palace, the colorful houses of Gamla Stan, or the impressive Vasa Museum are on almost every list. And yes, these are incredible places that tell the story of Sweden’s capital. But there is also another side of the city, one that many travelers miss. Hidden corners, quiet islands, peaceful squares, and unexpected viewpoints – this is where Stockholm shows its true charm.
At Cartinavia, we believe that a great tour should be more than just a checklist of attractions. That is why, in addition to the main sights, we love taking our guests to places that are less crowded, more personal, and full of atmosphere. Our eco-friendly carts move easily through the narrow streets and across bridges, giving us the freedom to explore parts of the city that are often forgotten in traditional sightseeing. These stops are never rushed. We pause, share stories, and let our guests enjoy the small details that make Stockholm unique.
Riddarholmen – history and peace by the water
One of our favorite hidden gems is Riddarholmen, a small island right next to Gamla Stan. Tourists often walk past it on their way to other places, but few take the time to stop here. Yet Riddarholmen is filled with history. The island is home to Riddarholmskyrkan, the church where many Swedish kings and queens are buried. Around the church, you can see grand 17th-century palaces that once belonged to noble families. But what makes Riddarholmen truly special is its calm atmosphere. From Evert Taube’s Terrass, you get a wide view of Lake Mälaren. The water stretches out in front of you, the air is quiet, and the city feels far away even though you are in the very center. Guests often tell us this is one of the most peaceful moments of their trip. Couples find it romantic, seniors enjoy the comfort, and families appreciate a short break where children can simply sit and look at the boats.
Skeppsholmen – where history meets art
Another stop that surprises our guests is Skeppsholmen, once the heart of Sweden’s navy. For centuries, this was the place where ships were built, sailors trained, and weapons prepared. Today, the island tells a very different story. The old buildings are still there – the former naval academy, the torpedo factory, and the shipyard workshops – but now they serve new purposes. Some are museums, some are restaurants, and some are creative spaces filled with art. We love to drive past the sculpture park of Moderna Museet, where modern artworks stand in the open air. It feels almost unreal – one moment you are passing an old military building, and the next you see bright sculptures shining against the blue water. Guests often laugh at the contrast, and it shows perfectly how Stockholm mixes old and new.
The Skeppsholmen Church, no longer used for religious services, is now a concert hall where music fills the space that once served sailors. This change of purpose gives the island a unique energy. The views from Skeppsholmen back to the city are also breathtaking, but what we love most is the slower pace compared to the busy center.
Kastellholmen – a small island with a big story
Just across a short bridge from Skeppsholmen lies Kastellholmen, one of the smallest islands in central Stockholm. Here you find the old red fortress that once protected the harbor. From this high point, you can see far across the water – from the grand City Hall in one direction to the lively Gröna Lund amusement park in the other.
Many visitors never make it here, because it is hidden away and not always on the tourist route. But for us, it is a perfect stop. The mix of history and fun is unforgettable. On one side, you look at the serious fortress with its cannons. On the other, you hear the music and laughter from the rides of Gröna Lund. It is a wonderful example of Stockholm’s contrasts – a city where the past and present stand side by side.
Helgeandsholmen – the center of Swedish politics
In the very heart of the city, between Gamla Stan and modern Norrmalm, lies Helgeandsholmen. It is small, but very important – this is where the Swedish Parliament is located. Most tourists walk over its bridges without realizing they are passing the political center of the country. When we stop here with our guests, they often enjoy hearing stories about how Sweden is governed. The Parliament building itself is impressive, but the views from the island are just as beautiful. From here, you can see the elegant stone arches of Norrbro, the historic bridge leading directly towards the Royal Palace, with the towers of the Old Town rising just behind it. It is one of those places where history, tradition, and modern life meet in one spot.
Djurgården – more than museums
Most visitors know Djurgården for its famous museums – the Vasa, Skansen, the ABBA Museum, and many others. These are amazing attractions, of course, but the island also hides a softer, quieter side. Once the royal hunting grounds, Djurgården is still full of green spaces, forest paths, and little surprises. We like to show guests the Djurgårdsvarvet, a historic shipyard where wooden boats are still repaired. We ride along quiet lanes where only locals walk their dogs or sit with a fishing rod. Families often enjoy a stop for ice cream at a small café by the water, far from the tourist crowds. In these moments, you feel the island’s natural beauty and its slower rhythm – a perfect balance to the busy museums nearby.
Why hidden gems matter
It is easy to focus only on the big landmarks when you visit a city. But the places you remember the longest are often the quiet corners, the unexpected views, or the small details. At Cartinavia, we believe that a good Stockholm sightseeing tour should include both. You should see the famous sites, of course, but you should also have the chance to stop, breathe, and discover something less obvious.
These hidden corners tell stories that connect the past with the present. They give you moments of calm, surprise, and reflection. And they make your visit more personal, because not every traveler finds them. Our carts make it possible to explore these places without effort, without stress, and without missing the big highlights.
